Once upon a time ... Cultura e sub-cultura anglo a Torino
Torino negli ultimi quaranta anni ha piacevolmente subito il fascino esercitato dal mondo britannico-irlandese, che sotto la Mole si è manifestato in diversi ambiti: musica, sport, cinema, moda e talvolta anche come stile di vita. A fine anni ‘70 poi negli anni ‘80 la città sabauda ha ospitato i concerti delle più importanti band d’oltremanica (come ad esempio Rolling Stones, Cure, Ultravox, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, Clash, Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark (OMD), Police, Ian Gillan Band, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cabaret Voltaire, UK Subs, Julian Cope), eventi che hanno lasciato in eredità non solo un raffinato gusto musicale ma anche un nuovo stile di vita. Nelle strade a scacchiera della città sono apparsi Mod, Casual, Punk e naturalmente non sono mancati i seguaci della British Invasion. Nel nuovo millennio la passione per il calcio inglese, ripulito dalle scorie violente degli anni ‘80/’90, esplode e sempre più spesso giovani torinesi iniziano a intraprendere viaggi in Inghilterra per visitare i fantastici stadi britannici durante i matchday. Non solo, c`è anche chi va nella City per fare shopping, essendo Londra la culla mondiale del fashion e degli stili emergenti. Il legame di Torino con il mondo britannico-irlandese è una realtà matura e ben consolidata ma anche un mondo con qualcosa di nuovo da esplorare. Per questo motivo si è pensato di portare sulle rive del Po ancora un po’ di UK-Irish sotto forma di una festa in cui sarà il cinema a fare da padrone. La città è particolarmente sensibile a questa forma d’arte, sono tante le rassegne che vengono annualmente ben accolte (Torino Film Festival, Cineambiente, ViewFest Digital Movie Festival, Cine Show, SeeYouSound Festival solo per citarne alcune). Di contorno non mancheranno musica e altre iniziative tutte orientate a fare divertire i simpatizzanti e appassionati del britsh-irish.
Una rassegna Anglofona nel cuore di San Salvario
Una rassegna presso il Cine Teatro Baretti di film di produzione britannica e irlandese che propongono alcuni tra i temi più caldi della società e cultura britannico-irlandese.
Il cinema ha spesso fotografato e analizzato le caleidoscopiche e affascinanti sfaccettature della società anglosassone, evidenziandone non solo i caratteri positivi e, in alcune circostanze, iconici, ma anche le criticità e i problemi sociali in maniera sincera e puntuale. Anche dal punto di vista tecnico-registico molti film sono diventati manifesto di uno stile ben connotato e preciso, caratterizzato da un ritmo vertiginoso e incalzante. I confini tra le varie forme d’arte, mai come nell’ambito anglosassone, sono labili e sovrapponibili: il cinema è forse quella che le sintetizza meglio di tutte. Per questo motivo abbiamo pensato di creare una manifestazione che sia la celebrazione di questa cultura, abbracciandola in senso lato e non solo attraverso la “settima arte”. L’idea fondante è quella di creare un ambiente familiare in cui poter immergersi nella cultura britannico-irlandese e dove poter oltre al cinema apprezzare la musica, il cibo, la letteratura e l’editoria britannica sia cartacea che musicale. L’evento si rivolge chiaramente a coloro che sono già amanti di questa cultura, ma soprattutto a chi invece non la conosce, sperando che, come è successo a noi, se ne innamori.
La rassegna si svolgerà il 25 - 26 - 27 settembre 2015 e ai film abbinerà un “resident pub” (come potrebbe mancare…) che durante tutto l’evento fornirà birre di produzione britannico-irlandese (Bitter Ale e Stout ad esempio). Film e birra si inseriscono in un contesto ancora più ampio: una vera e propria festa di tre giorni dedicata agli amanti della cultura british nell sue varie forme. Apertura dei festeggiamenti venerdì tardo pomeriggio in grande stile, con il concerto di una band londinese molto in voga al momento, i Motorcycle Display Team, e la proiezione del primo film a tema, The Firm, dedicato al mondo degli Hooligans. Nei giorni successivi seguiranno le proiezioni degli altri film in rassegna e diversi eventi collaterali volti a far sentire il pubblico davvero immerso nel mondo britannico/irlandese.
Durante tutto il weekend anche il cibo si adatterà al contesto: saranno serviti infatti piatti tipici inglesi come il Fish and Chips, il Pork Ribs o l’English Breakfast. Si potranno assaggiare distillati, vini e formaggi caratteristici: un modo perfetto per immergere tutti i propri sensi nel contesto della festa e per assaporarne al meglio lo spirito. La colazione all’inglese di domenica, per esempio, sarà perfetta abbinata alla prima proiezione della giornata: un modo goloso per entrare nel mood del festival fin dal mattino...
Il BIFF sarà animato infine anche da alcuni stand dove si potranno acquistare LP, CD, DVD di musica British-Irish. Sono previste anche iniziative legate alla produzione letteraria sempre d’oltremanica e una vetrina di riviste tra le più rinomate (fashion, sport, music, society, art and design) del panorama britannico saranno esposte ed in vendita durante i tre giorni.

Once upon a time – Anglo culture & sub-culture in Turin
Over the past forty years Turin has amiably succumbed to the lure of the Brit-Irish world which, under the "Mole", has emerged in various spheres: music, sports, cinema, fashion and, sometimes, even lifestyle. At the end of the 70s, then in the 80s, this Savoy city has hosted concerts of some of the most important bands from across the Channel (such as The Rolling Stones, Cure, Ultravox, Depeche Mode, Simple Minds, The Clash, Orchestral Manouvres (OMD), Police, Ian Gillan Band, Souxsie and the Banshees, Cabaret Voltaire, UK Subs, Julian Cope). These events have left a legacy not only of refined musical tastes but also a new lifestyle with the appearance of Mod, Casual and Punk along the checkered streets of the city, as well as producing a large following of the 'British invasion'. In the new millennium passion for English football has exploded, after thankfully being cleaned up of the violent scum of the 80/90s. More and more Turin youngsters have begun to take trips to England to visit the fantastic British stadiums during important match days. Not only are matches popular but there are also those who go to London for shopping, which always retains its status as cradle of world fashion and emerging styles. Turin's connection with the Brit-Irish world is a mature and well established reality but also a world with something new to explore. That's why it has been decided to bring to the banks of the River Po a little bit more of the Brit-Irish world, principally in the form of a 'festival' in which cinema will play the leading role….. Turin is particularly sensitive to this art form, with many different annual festivals taking place such as the Turin Film Festival, Cineambiente, ViewFest Digital Movie Festival, Cine Show, SeeYouSound Festival to name just a few. The programme of films will be accompanied by great music as well as other fun initiatives all directed towards ensuring that Brit-Irish followers and lovers enjoy themselves to the full.

An Anglophone festival in the heart of San Salvario (Turin Downtown)
The idea is to host a festival of British and Irish film productions at the Cine Teatro Baretti, offering some of the hottest issues of Brit-Irish society and culture.
Cinema has often filmed and analyzed the multi-coloured , fascinating facets of Anglo-Saxon society, highlighting not only its positive and, sometimes, even iconic aspects, but also its critical points and social problems in an honest, prompt way. From a technical point of view, many films have become a “manifesto” of its characteristic and precise style, distinguished by a persistent, frenetic pace.
The boundaries among the various forms of art have never, as in Anglo-Saxon society, been so fleeting and superimposed. Films or, more generally, cinema, is maybe the one that sums them up the best. For this reason we thought of creating an event that compliments this culture, embracing it broadly and not only through a cinematographic lens. The basic idea is to create a friendly environment in which you can delve into British-Irish culture and where possible – apart from cinema – appreciate music, food, literature, British magazine and music publishing. This event clearly aims to involve lovers of Brit-Irish culture but also hopes to attract those who are not familiar with this culture and – as happened to us -- have them fall in love with it.
The event will take place on the 25th, 26th and 27th September and will be sided by a 'resident pub' (how could it not be...) that will provide British-Irish beer (bitter, ale and stout, for example) for the whole three days. Films and beer integrate into a much wider context: a real 3-day party dedicated to the lovers of British culture in all its forms. We’ll open the party big time with the concert of a Cockney band: the Motorcycle Display Team and screening of the first film “The Firm”, focused on hooliganism. Many other screenings and events will follow during the next couple of days, aimed at making the audience feel really submerged into the British-Irish world.
During the whole weekend food will also be adapted to the context: English dishes such as Fish & Chips, Pork Ribs or the famous English Breakfast will be served. It will also be possible to sample fine spirits, wines and typical cheeses: a perfect way to submerge yourself into the context of this festival and to feel its spirit to the full. The English Breakfast on Sunday, for example, will be a perfect lead up to the first screening of the afternoon: a gourmand way to enter into the mood of the Festival from morning onwards …
The British Irish Film Fest will be animated lastly (but not least) by a number of stands where it will be possible to buy LPs, CDs, DVDs of British-Irish Music. Also scheduled are initiatives focused on literary production from across the channel and a display of the most renowned magazines (of fashion, sport, music, society, art and design) coming from the Brit world. They will be displayed and on sale during the three day event.
